Situation

Van Meirvenne & Zonen bvba is, since 1955, known in the steel industry as a company that values quality and service. They are a family owned company, importing and exporting steel and producing concrete steel in cold drawing process.

Problem and recommendation

When cold drawing larger diameters of steel wires, they faced premature calendar bearing failures. They last only for 150 tons of production whilst they should last for 1000 tons. This resulted in unplanned shut downs and production loss and extra costs for bearing replacements. The bearings were greased by a high temperature grease. Ingelbeen-Soete advised to switch to Mobilith SHC 1000 Special. This NLGI 2 grease contains an ISO VG 1000 synthetic base oil and is strongly fortified with solid lubricants including 11% graphite and 1% molybdenum disulphide for maximum protection of bearings operating under conditions of extremely slow speeds, sliding contacts, and high temperatures, in order to extend bearing life time.

Results

Thanks to Mobilith SHC 1000 Special, bearing life time was increased up to 1200 tons (8 x longer), resulting in following savings:

€ 3.360 savings on bearing purchase and replacement costs.
42 hours of unplanned down time avoided, potentially leading to 168 tons of extra production.
